A World of Seemingly Endless Waves, Sand and Dunes
Experience Again the Carefree Times of Enjoying Nature Away From the Hustle of Everyday Life
Return from your outing refreshed and renewed, feeling like a young kid again at the beach, sharing playful time with your dog.
Experiencing the Beach
What is it really like out on the long stretch of sand that is Pismo State Beach? Numbers of miles for its length or other data cannot express the reality of the experience on California’s longest beach with its highest dunes. Being there, beachcombing with your 4 legged friend, just the waves, gulls and sand, is truly an experience of getting away from it all.
Many times I have walked miles on the beach with my own dogs, with only the sounds of the waves and wind.
Pismo State Beach – Wander 17 Miles of Nonstop Beach
Pismo State Beach is the longest single stretch of beach on the California coast. It has over 17 miles of nonstop beach. The sandy beach is extremely wide, hundreds of feet, with wide dunes that separate most of it from the villages along the beach. This makes the beach an especially scenic get away. The villages are nearby but unseen.
Spacious Expanses of Sand, Uncrowded, Just You and the Waves
The huge width of the beach and dunes means it is never crowded. In fact, at many places along the beach it may be quite a distance to the next person walking on the beach.
Even the access areas around the Pismo Pier or the onramps are spacious and uncrowded, except for special holidays such as the 4th of July fireworks.
You and your dog can get your feet wet splashing along through the tidepools while you look for sand dollars, shells and ocean polished stones.
Miles of the Tallest Sand Dunes on the West Coast
The dunes stretch for 1/4 mile to several miles inland. There are paths through the dunes, up and over the rolling hills like terrain. The dunes are listed as having the tallest dunes on the west coast, with the tallest at 500 feet tall. No need to work hard climbing dunes that tall though. There are plenty of dune trails over gentle slopes.
Mild Weather Usually, But Have a Jacket or Sweatshirt Handy
For most of the time the weather is mild and the waves are relatively gentle. During the winter months there are some rain storms that can have high winds. But the area is classified as having a warm, Mediterranean climate so in general it has mild weather year round.
Vehicle Access to Parts of the Beach, Drive Way, Way Out Next to the Waves
From the Grover Beach onramp to Pismo State Beach going south the beach is also open to vehicles. For a small fee you can drive right out onto the packed sand and go south for miles. One mile south of the Grover Beach onramp you will see the onramp from Oceano. Driving, or walking, farther south you see the famous Oceano Dunes on your left.
One mile south of the Grover Beach onramp you will see the onramp from Oceano. Driving, or walking, farther south you see the famous Oceano Dunes on your left. These dunes have been used many times in movies, from classic movie times until more recent.
Dunes Trails and Separate Areas for ATV’s
There are trails for people and other areas set aside for ATV’s, so they are separated from the rest of the beach and dunes. A nearby stable also has trail rides on the dune trails and along the beach.
As you head farther south the beach and dunes take on a truly getaway aspect. It is an adventure and escape that is very nearby, yet can seem a million miles away from it all.
Pack a Picnic Lunch or Get One From a Beachfront Deli or Casual Take Out Restaurant
You could start with a healthy picnic, packing some bottled water, nuts and dried fruit, perhaps a sandwich on whole wheat bread. Or you can stop off at one of the beach onramp area stores for take out or deli food. From the start of each onramp access, Pismo, Grover Beach or Oceano, it is about a mile to the next village. It is surprising how fast that mile can go by when you are mentally occupied with the sights and sounds at the ocean’s edge. It is a great way to get that walking exercise that you and your dog can enjoy.
Depending on where you start your beach walk, there are lots of places to grab a bite to each and pack it up to take with you. Pismo Beach, the town, has the famous Splash Cafe about half a block from the Pismo Pier. Seafood, sandwiches and food to go is available.
At the Grover Beach onramp you will see Fin’s Seafood right on the beach.
To the south in Oceano you can grab a beach snack or picnic at the Beach Burger or the Pier Liquor and Deli.
Recreate Yourself Away From It All and Return Renewed
Along Pismo State Beach you can watch the waves, smell the salt air, add shells to your beachcombing collection and relax, far away from the usual stresses of everyday life. It is a good place to share special time with your 4 legged friend and have a “time-out” to play and rejuvenate.
You will return with new energy and a fresh, uplifted feeling.
